Gunstock Campground: Apparently Your Reserved Site Is More of a Suggestion**
I don't believe I've ever left a negative Google review. I generally contact a business first and give them the opportunity to make things right. Most businesses actually want to.
Gunstock cured me of that quaint notion.
I reserved a full-hookup site for two nights. I couldn't make it the first night, but arrived early the next morning and went for a six-mile hike while waiting for the camp store to open.
I returned exhausted, starving, and feeling weak. My ambitions were modest: **eat, shower, and collapse at the campsite I had paid for.**
I checked in, drove to my site and discovered...
**Someone was already camping in it.**
Not just parked there. Fully moved in and hooked up to **my water and electric**, complete with water spraying from their ill-fitting connection and creating a large puddle underneath.
Turns out they had reserved a site **two rows away with no water or electric.** Yet somehow they had "mistakenly" landed two rows over, in my full-hookup site, and connected themselves to utilities they hadn't paid for.
We've all made mistakes.
I've parked one space away from where I intended.
I've never accidentally parked **two rows away, connected myself to someone else's water and electricity, and spent the night.**
After nearly an hour waiting for them to vacate my site, I discovered Gunstock's solution: move them **two sites away from me** and apparently let them pay for the upgrade they'd already been test-driving.
No apology from the campers. Nothing.
I no longer felt comfortable staying, so I left and called Gunstock requesting a refund.
They refused.
Worse, the staff member **defended the other campers**, insisting they had accidentally taken my site and even telling me they **hadn't used the utilities**.
An interesting claim considering **I SAW THEM HOOKED UP TO BOTH** — and have photographs, including the substantial puddle underneath their camper from the leaking water connection.
For my trouble, however, Gunstock did give me a coupon for a **free Bavarian pretzel**.
So there's that.
The other campers' behavior isn't actually why I'm leaving this review. Businesses can't control everything their customers do.
**They CAN control how they respond.**
Gunstock had every opportunity to turn this into a mildly annoying story about a camping mix-up. Instead, they accommodated the people occupying my site, refused my refund, and argued with me about things I had personally witnessed and photographed.
And that's how Gunstock Campground earned my first negative Google review.
**But hey...I still have that free pretzel coupon.**
