点评:We took the High Road from Santa Fe to Taos after much research, and overall it was a worthwhile trip. Our first stop was at Chimayó to see the Santuario de Chimayó—arguably the most beautiful of the old churches on the route (note: no photos allowed inside). Next, we stopped in Truchas, where the church was harder to find and less striking, though driving along the town’s main street was still enjoyable. At Las Trampas, the exterior of the San José de Gracia Church was picturesque, though the interior was closed during our visit.
If you’re expecting “the most scenic drive in America,” you might be underwhelmed, but it is still a leisurely and scenic route, with overviews of the mountains, several historic and unique churches as highlights. This trip took about 3 hours with stops.
Once in Taos, we explored the historic town square, which was quiet since many shops and galleries were closed, but we enjoyed window-shopping and noting the inviting restaurant menus. The San Francisco de Asís Mission Church is another must-see stop.
One point of interest: the UNESCO heritage site of Taos Pueblo charges $25 per person. It’s a small historic town with only a handful of families still living there, though student-led tours (tips encouraged) are included. Worth considering if you’re interested in history and culture.
We plan to return to explore more of the Enchanted Circle and to take the Low Road back, which is said to offer beautiful views along the river.
