点评:We drove to the salton sea in California. A huge salty polluted toxic sea in the desert. It is described as an industrial accident and environmental disaster.
We are going to a “fallout” town: Bombay Beach. The lake and town used to be resort destination in 1950s. Now it’s apocalyptic. An enclave of artists squat there. Hopefully we aren’t enveloped by a toxic and stinky dust storm which are common in this area.
There were huge palm tree nurseries, citrus and other farms on the sea’s shores. The agricultural runoff contributed to the salton seas pollution.
The massive sea looks calm and pretty from a distance. Through the haze, you can see the shimmering mountains to the south.
We drove by an idyllic campground on the north side of the sea. There are picnic tables and a beach. There are also bathrooms (unknown if working), arroyo secos, and a few low shrubs. But otherwise it is very desolate. We brought snacks - just in case.
Yes. People live here! It wasn’t too smelly but it was hot and bone dry.
The elevation is -200 ft.
According to other sources, thousands of migratory birds rely on this sea as a respite during their journeys.
