国家鸟类公园的点评
点评：If this were the Pittsburgh Aviary, I'd be impressed. But as the "National" Aviary, at the price, underwhelming.
I did enjoy the new Grasslands Birds area, where the super-cute subcompact-sized birds are very visible. I did not like the partially new layout, with one in-and-out, one loop, and the misplaced outdoor door which "everybody misses" until they have left and come back in.
My impression was that the number and variety of birds has been pared down, both in the Wetlands where it used to feel almost overcrowded (and much more humid) and in the "NEW Tropical Rainforest". "New"? They do try to keep up with cleaning the bird souvenirs on the railings but that's not new. I still wouldn't touch those railings which makes it harder to linger but do - the more you linger, the more you see. However, I couldn't detect anything "new" about it except in the adjacent back arc of "Canary's Call" where yes, two canaries were singing their hearts out while the Lorikeets were having such a to-do that we were both fascinated and driven away. I think the fruit bats are new, which raised varied reactions in our group.
AFAIK it's a one of a kind experience, so don't be deterred. But lower your expectations and raise you price tolerance.
A word about Handicap Accessibility: supposedly there is a drop off and limited parking at the Arch Street entrance. When we visited, school buses were parked there. There are also a few spaces in the rear parking lot but it is a long walk from the lot to the entrance and part of that walk is crushed stone, a definite deterrent for wheel-chair pushers.
