点评:23/4/26 - Las Palmas - Teatro Perez Galdos
We three middle aged guys from London came to Gran Can to see Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. We spent a week between Las Palmas and Playa del Ingles.
We are used to starting casually for the opera in London and elsewhere so we were relieved that the clientele arriving was a mix.
We were up in the Gods, skipping the lifts but popping out to explore the roof terrace and its views.
The opera started slightly late but we were rewarded by an appropriate period staging (14th century) and excellent singing and performances from the whole cast and orchestra.
My opera loving friend was so happy it was not set in a car park.
A projected image of the opera (as seen from the stall) was on both sides of the stage so we in our restricted view seats could see the action. This was useful as it was quite a strain on the neck to look down all the time.
Surtitles in Spanish accompanied the Italian singing. We did not expect a translation into English. We did not hear many English voices in the audience.
At the interval we thought we would have a drink. In an upstairs bar the Champagne was being poured and the well dressed were to be seen sipping away.
There were no price lists for any of the drinks or sandwiches. I asked the young man, opening the bubbly bottles and pouring the many glasses, how much a glass was. He did not know. He asked the waitress who didn't answer. Ok she was busy. The till as so far away I could not read the prices. After a few minutes of being ignored I walked away, thirsty.
This is unacceptable. By law in the EU prices must be displayed in full sight and easily read. It is not a case of 'if you need to ask the price you can't afford it'. It's The Law. We flew especially to see this opera. We can afford it. It is the principle. Please rectify this situation.
