点评:This is the most original of gardens, and my favourite one to visit that I can think of. It is the result of two creative peoples' intentions over the last 25 years, not a committee-designed tourist destination.
Don't come here if you are looking for traditional planting with a tea room, lemon drizzle cake, neat lawn edges, pots of bedding on every corner and a plant nursery. there is none of that here.
Do come if you thrill to the sight of wild flowers mixed with cultivars, with tall perennials leaping above beds of ground elder...Rose wichuraiana and Vitis coignetiae wreathed through trees, large yew and bold geometry of beech and yew hedges marching down a hillside.
As a garden designer, I revel in the joy that such a large garden can look so splendid, with so much wildlife habitat, and yet be relatively low maintenance. If you are distressed by louche planting, preferring all to be neat and tidy, go to Levens Hall topiary garden instead.
