点评:The Quietest Hour of My Trip
After spending the day hiking Haleakalā, I wasn't looking for another big attraction. I just wanted somewhere peaceful to sit for a while before calling it a day.
Since I was staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites Maui North Shore, Hoaloha Park was only a short walk away. It turned out to be exactly what I needed.
It would be easy to drive right past this place without ever realizing there's a small public beach tucked away here. By Maui standards, it isn't the island's prettiest stretch of sand, and that's probably part of its charm. Because it's so understated, very few visitors seem to know it's here. If you're looking for a quiet place to escape the crowds for an hour, this little beach is worth seeking out.
One thing you'll notice right away is the dozens of outrigger canoes stored near the shoreline, a reminder that this is very much a local spot. I later learned the canoe club holds races on Saturdays, so I imagine those days can be considerably busier. But on the weekday afternoon I visited, there were no tourist crowds at all. Just a few paddlers practicing offshore, an occasional boat moving quietly through the protected harbor, and the West Maui Mountains rising in the distance. The calm water only adds to the peaceful atmosphere.
I found a weathered driftwood log overlooking the beach and sat there watching everything unfold at its own pace.
After several days of chasing waterfalls, navigating the Road to Hāna, and hiking through Haleakalā National Park, it was refreshing to spend an hour somewhere that asked absolutely nothing of me. No itinerary. No crowds. No pressure to check another attraction off the list.
Somewhere during that quiet hour, my thoughts drifted back to the unexpected kindness of someone I'd met earlier in the trip. I pulled out my phone, opened our text conversation, and finally sent the message I'd been meaning to write.
"I never properly thanked you."
I slipped my phone back into my pocket, assuming that would be the end of the conversation, and went back to watching the harbor.
Eventually I walked over to dinner before heading back to the hotel.
If you're expecting one of Maui's famous postcard beaches, this isn't it. But if you're staying in Kahului and want a peaceful place to unwind away from the crowds, Hoaloha Park is a wonderful little hidden spot. Sometimes the most memorable places aren't the most spectacular—they're simply the ones that give you exactly what you need at exactly the right moment.
