点评:Perhaps I shouldn’t have visited this year and on a Monday as half the interpreters were missing and the visitor center is a trailer while they construct a new one.
The structures are by and large original and impressive. The signage is great, but one can only learn so much from a few paragraphs.
The “interpreter” at the African village was demonstrating drumming techniques. While interesting, it would have been so much better to have someone tell what daily life was like and the horror of being dislocated from the home to life of slavery. The interpreters at the English, Irish, and especially the German houses were good. The 1820 and 1850 houses were meh. There was no one at the Indian village or the earliest Colonial home, which was especially disconcerting as I had driven 31/2 hrs to get to the Museum and was especially interested in the daily life of the earliest settlers.
In sum, so much could be done with this Museum, but it falls far short of its potential. Given the construction, I would advise waiting until the opening of the new visitor center in 2027 if you coming from any distance. It’s not the Williamsburg of Frontier culture.
