Very disappointing!
勒梅耶儿博物馆的点评
点评：We turned up at the museum to a beautiful entrance, with stunning carved buildings, and initially everything looked very positive. Unfortunately, that was where the positives ended for us.
We were advised immediately that it was cash only, despite there being a card machine on site, which was rather frustrating.
The biggest disappointment, however, was the condition of the artwork and the museum itself. The paintings are in very poor condition — many are extremely faded, and there is even visible mould growing on some of the pieces. There is also evidence of what appears to be rat droppings above some of the paintings, which is incredibly concerning and can only contribute to further deterioration of these precious works.
On closer inspection, the maintenance of the buildings is also very poor. What initially looks beautiful from the entrance becomes noticeably more run-down as you explore further, with the buildings clearly showing signs of neglect. Given the historical and cultural importance of the property, this is incredibly disappointing.
There is very little information provided about the individual artworks or Le Mayeur’s life. His biography is essentially presented on a single sheet of A4, which feels completely inadequate given the fascinating history behind the artist, his work and his home.
And this is such a shame, because the artwork itself is beautiful, intricate and incredibly special. It is heartbreaking to see Le Mayeur’s life’s work and the home he shared with Ni Pollok slowly deteriorating after they donated their home to the government.
Considering the relatively high entrance fee, I would expect the buildings, grounds and, most importantly, the artwork to be maintained to a much higher standard. It is also surprisingly difficult to know exactly what forms part of the museum, as signage is very limited.
Sanur has undergone so much improvement and beautification, which makes the condition of this important piece of its history even more disappointing. This should be a real cultural treasure for Sanur and Bali, but sadly it currently feels neglected.
