Discovering the 9th century crypt

点评：On previous visits to Auxerre we had visited Saint Germain's Abbey. Each time we have enjoyed it. This year we revisited the Gallo-Roman archeological museum inside the abbey and caught up with the latest artistic exhibition from the Pompidou collection called "La mer est ton miroir" as well as revisiting the church. In previous years we thought we had visited the underground "crypts" where you can see the foundations and look through grids upon the tombs of monks. All of that was free. This year we found out that this was the archeological crypts of the former Romanesque aisle and that there was another crypt dating back to the 5th and 9th century which was accessible only via a paid tour.
So this year we paid for the guided tour. It takes you through colonnaded vaulted corridors and we saw the 5th century tomb of the Bishop of Auxerre, Saint Germain, the oratory and some of the oldest frescos in France. The crypt is well preserved and we thought it was worth paying to visit. The tour is usually in French but you can be given an explanatory booklet in English that helps identify what you are seeing. It took us about twenty minutes to visit. No photos allowed. They do have one photo of the crypt in the church to give you an idea of what you would be visiting.
