McCaig's Tower, often called "McCaig's Folly," is a prominent, colosseum-like monument overlooking the town of Oban.
Commissioned in 1897 by wealthy banker John Stuart McCaig, it was originally intended to serve as a private museum and family memorial while providing vital winter employment for local stonemasons.
Construction of the tower continued for five years until McCaig died of cardiac arrest in 1902. Because he passed away before the elaborate project could be finished, the building was permanently abandoned, leaving only the striking, hollow circular outer wall that visitors see today.
McCaig was an avid admirer of Greek and Roman architecture, taking inspiration from the Colosseum in Rome.
McCaig's will outlined a generous trust to fund the installation of twelve statues inside the structure, but his surviving sister successfully challenged the will in court, rendering the grander plans void.
Built from local Bonawe granite, the wall features a circumference of roughly 200 meters, accented by two rings of lancet-arched openings. It cost £5,000 to construct (equivalent to roughly £700,000 today).
Designated as a Category B listed historic monument, the interior is now a public garden. Visitors can climb the stairs to take in panoramic views of Oban Bay and the surrounding Inner Hebrides islands, including Mull, Lismore, and Kerrera 😊
