点评:We came here for an afternoon, super easy to reach with a direct train from London Waterloo. The train stops at Portsmouth Harbour Station, right outside the historic dockyard.
We started with lunch nearby, then took the 5-minute shuttle boat to the Submarine Museum (don’t be misled by Google Maps, which suggests a 40-minute walk). The museum was excellent—we especially enjoyed the tour of HMS Alliance, led by Navy veterans who patiently answered our questions about submarines and life on board. The exhibits in the main museum were engaging and informative, although a few of the interactive displays could use some maintenance. There’s also a small café offering snacks and drinks.
After about an hour, we took the shuttle back to the main dockyard. Unfortunately, Action Stations was closed for refurbishment, but our son loved cruising around the small harbour in his electric boat.
HMS Victory is currently largely covered in scaffolding, but you can still explore inside, which is a stunning experience. You can also follow the restoration via a separate entrance.
We finished our visit at the Mary Rose museum, an outstanding display with plenty of interactive features for children.
All in all, it was a great day out. Tickets aren’t cheap (what if guidebooks were included?), but they offer good value for money, especially since you can return within a year, which we’ll definitely be doing.
