点评：Since we spent a lot longer than originally anticipated at Kings Mountain National Military Park, we arrived later in the day, around 4:30 p.m. While this park is FREE to enter and park, its hours are daily from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., so it was nearly closing time. As a result, we missed the opportunity to see the 18-minute film, "Cowpens: A Battle Remembered."
We only spent about five minutes getting our Passport cancellation stamps and briefly looking at the museum exhibits. The Auto Loop Road, a 3.8 mile, one-way road around the perimeter of the battlefield with wayside exhibits, closed at 4:30 p.m., so we did not have time to tour it.
This was a major, defining battle of the American Revolution. British Commander General Cornwallis's defeat here forced him to give up his effort to take South Carolina. The Maryland Men, known as the "Maryland Line," were the backbone of the American army at Cowpens. They fought under a brilliant Maryland commander, Lieutenant Colonel John Eager Howard, who helped orchestrate the victory that ruined Cornwallis's plans. In fact, the Battle of Cowpens on January 17, 1781, set off an unbroken chain of events that directly resulted in General Cornwallis surrendering at Yorktown just nine months later.
