点评:Visited Graz a couple of months ago, and took the tram down to the Schloss Eggenberg. The costs of the tram and the admission to the Schloss were covered by the 'Graz Card' (certainly worth getting if there for a few days). Eggenberg is splendid place - a beautiful symmetrical building in lovely gardens. The is also a special 'astrological' garden which is worth seeing.
The tour of the castle (easy to do by oneself - no need for a guide) takes a couple of hours, and takes in many beautiful rooms in which the history of the palace and the Eggenberg dynasty are explained and illustrated. The original Count was an important political figure with a huge range of talents and interests. There is a particularly interesting account of his visits to Rome as the 'Botschafter' (ambassador) to Rome during which he had to make strenuous efforts to flatter the Pope. Later on he rather fell from grace. Impossible to imagine that sort of thing happening in this day and age.... The history of several generations of the Eggenberg clan is described in some detail in some of the fine upstairs rooms. Some of the male family members in later generations clearly went off the rails rather, also hard to imagine nowadays?
There is a pleasant (and cheap) cafe in the grounds, which is also worth a visit.
Overall, I would thoroughly recommend the Schloss - a delightful place providing interesting insights into the history of middle-Europe during that period.
