点评:The Bourbaki Panorama is a 19th-century cylindrical painting, depicting the events of the 1871 retreat of the French Bourbaki Army's 87,000 soldiers into Switzerland during the Franco-Prussian War. It is the work of Red Cross volunteer Édouard Castres and a cast of Swiss artists, including celebrated 19th-century painter, Ferdinand Hodler.
You can find the Bourbaki Panorama at Lowenplatz within a complex that includes a cinema, library, art exhibition space and a couple of restaurants. It is open from 10am to 6pm daily. Entry fee CHF 15.00 per adult. Some discount if you have the Lucerne Guest Card issued by city hotels.
What you find is a rotunda with two viewing floors. The first with more general information about the Franco-Prussian war, the retreat of the Bourbaki Army into Switzerland and the huge humanitarian and peacekeeping efforts by the Swiss Red Cross which had just been founded 8 years earlier.
This prepares you to enter the upper floor where you can view the actual curved canvas which is 112 metres in full length and 10 metres tall. It is complemented with three-dimensional objects in the foreground. With some knowledge learned on the lower floor, the scenes of the Bourbaki Panorama become not just beautiful but also sobering and meaningful. We very really enjoyed seeing this attraction and would gladly return to do so again the next time in Lucerne.
