点评:One of the highlights of Koblenz is this 1200-year-old Romanesque church built by Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne as his proprietary church. This may explain why is outside the Altstadt of Koblenz as well as the importance of the church in meetings and negotiations related to the Holy Roman Empire. It was also not a parish church but connected to a monastery. The current building was completed in its Romanesque style in 1208, but it did have goth renovations with the vaulted roof and ceiling star constellation in the 1400s. It stands as one of many twin tower Romanesque churches that dot the German Rhine region. It was named after St. Castor who was from the Moselle Valley, which is the river that meets the Rhine in Koblenz.
We visited while our cruise was docked in Koblenz after our visit to the Marksberg. We had sometime before dinner and decided to explore. While we visited the cable cars and the park beside the fortress, we also want to see this historic and well celebrated church. Like all Romanesque churches, it is dark and heavy without a lot of windows and light. Yet it has a beauty to it, especially its decorated ceiling. There are two burial looking sites adjacent to the apse. I believe one of them is the dedicated to Rizza, an alleged daughter of Louis the Pious. It was a great Romanesque church to see, especially when coupled with its history. If you have time in Koblenz, I recommend a visit.
