点评:My wife and I recently took a weekend trip to do some hikes in Mississippi and Louisiana with a base stay in Natchez. On Saturday morning, we took an opportunity to visit some of the great Antebellum homes that you come to Natchez to see.
We booked Longwood and Stanton Hall primarily because they are operated together and offer a discount ticket if you book a combo. We bought tickets online before going; however, on both our tours, people bought tours at the location. The homes here are great and something you have to see. I feel if you have to make choices as we did, be sure to see Longwood as there is simply nothing like it and it has the most interesting story.
We arrived early and had an opportunity to walk the grounds. We came back to the house right before our time started and joined about 8 others. The starts in the basement which is the only part of the house that was finished and occupied. You see how Nutt family live in the incomplete house which is very interesting. However, the most amazing part is to come to the 1st floor, main entrance level to see the house as it was left at the start of the Civil War complete with worker's tools and supplies.
The contractor for the job was a Pennsylvania company who needed to leave as the war started. Dr. Nutt thought it would be a short war, and the workers would come right back to finish. Instead, the war was brutally long, the South's economy changed forever, and Dr. Nutt died before its end. Still the finished exterior is amazing as the largest octagonal home in the US, inspired by a drawing in a book.
Again, if your time permits, then go to all the great Natchez homes. However, if you have to make choices, be sure to pick and see this one. It is truly unique and amazing.
