点评：We were on a cycling trip from Agen to Sarlat-de-Canéda, and passing this bridge (also known as the Agen Aqueduct) was a nice start to our trip, it is a spectacular structure. Spanning 550 metres with a approximately 9-metre wide canal lane, is the longest masonry canal bridge in Europe, the second longest aqueduct in France after Briare. It was completed in 1849, and was named a historic monument in in 2003. At the time, it represented a major engineering milestone. It is built entirely of local Quercy stone, recognizable by its white or pale yellow colour, a stone common to many bastides and structures in the region. This strong, fine-grain stone is know for its water resistance and ease of precise cutting. Its neoclassical design consists of 23 semi-circle arches. The bridge spans the Garonne River, and is part of the historic and UNESCO World Heritage-listed Canal des Deux Mers waterway system that links the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The Garonne river begins in the Pyrenées and flows northwest. Due to snowmelt and rainfall, the Garonne can experience sudden flooding. The creation of the bridge at this point allows for more reliable navigation to avoid the hazards of the river, making possible a year-round transport of timber, wine, grain, etc. Its presence made a significant difference in the economic expansion of the area. It has a pedestrian walkway with panoramic views of the area, particularly lovely during sunset. Note that there is a café velo at the Chateau d'eau as one passes under the bridge, a nice place to relax for cyclists.
