Bereginya may loosely be translated as "a female guardian figurine" from Russian
Bereginya Center of Folk Crafts的点评
点评:Some might suggest "amulet" as an alternative, but a clay "bereginya" is placed in a house to bestow good fortune upon both the home and its occupants.
We had scheduled our visit to that centre well in advance because we knew about it. I called them up, checked their opening hours (which is essential!) and included it in our long itinerary from Arkhangelsk to Petrozavodsk through Kargopol.
Kargopol is famous in Russia for its unique clay toys. They may cost an arm and a leg in Moscow and St. Petersburg but prices are quite reasonable in that small town where those valuable bric-a-brac are produced.
It was a no-brainer to locate it; it is tucked away in a lovely compact mansion in the central part of Kargopol. Visitors are provided with a large, free parking area. One may not only purchase a wide variety of their highly regarded products, but also take part in multiple mind-blowing folk art master-classes (only Russian spoken!), albeit with obligatory pre-registration.
As to us, we made a terrific shopping.
A must when in that isolated settlement in the middle of nowhere!
