点评:Having crossed the viaduct on the Jacobite train, I wanted to see it from the West viewpoint. preferably with the steam train going over.
We caught the (much delayed) Scotrail to Glenfinnan and after a lot of searching, found the path behind the dining cars that takes you to the hillside and the viewpoints. Research had suggested this would take about 17 mins and as you were already level with the railway should be relatively flat. That’s a lie!
There were some properly steep scrambly bits and then up & down sections around each bend and it took me about half an hour before I came out above s big crowd of people dotted across the hillside. Even then I was worried I’d missed the train as I’d heard a toot about 10 mins earlier. The views are amazing, although you can’t see Loch Shiel or the monument from the west side viewpoint, but it was perfect for the afternoon steam train.
It was well worth the climb for the views, especially when, after about an hour. there was whistle and the (delayed) Jacobite train came into view.
It’s a fairly easy walk down to the visitor centre, where there are a couple of cafes gift shop & the parking. You can then cross the main road and carry on to the Glenfinnan monument and the shores of Lovh Shiel.
