点评:A lovely house hidden away in the Sussex countryside, home of legendary author Rudyard Kipling. Plenty to see in this maze of a house, huge gardens and a plentiful car park. I recommend the short walk to the mill at the far side of the estate.
I'm pretty certain I encountered the ghost of Mr.Kipling here, only for a fleeting moment. Ascending the stairs to the first floor, I became aware of someone behind me. Upon turning, for a brief instant, I saw a gentlemen dressed in a fashion becoming that of the 1910's - 1920's. Initially I though it was a volunteer dressed in period dress, however, within a moment the gentlemen disappeared. Looking at one of the portraits of Mr.Kipling, I realised that the "person" I saw looked exactly like him...!!! Make of that what you will. I did ask a couple of volunteers if there had been reports of a ghost. One said that they hadn't seen anything, but another mentioned that they had heard a few stories of a presence in the house.
I enjoyed my visit here, as the house and displays were very interesting and on the whole the guides were fantastic. The were only two downsides, one was the very narrow road to get to the property, if you're unlucky enough to meet an oncoming vehicle - you're going to get stuck. Also, the only exception to the otherwise superb staff, was the gentleman in the book room / shop. We were discussing music and he was quite insulting about my taste in Wagner's ring cycle - to the point of almost calling me far right. If i had got his name, I would have reported him and named him here. That said, it wasn't enough to ruin what was an excellent visit.
One thing I would like to say to any NT hierarchy who may read this is; there was a huge amount of fruit on the trees in the garden going to waste. PLEASE make good use of it, give it to a local charity or use it in the kitchen / cafe. It was such a shame to see huge amounts of fruit wasting away when it could be made use of.
