点评:We went on the Petra Island Tour in September 2026. We enjoyed it and appreciated the friendliness of the people involved. Here's the story (sorry it is so long):
We were scheduled for the 12PM Saturday tour. We were in NYC and it's about an hour and 40 minute drive away. However, we had issues with the car rental company (had a reservation but they didn't have a car - how Seinfeld!). Donna had called in the morning to confirm we were coming and reminded us the boat leaves right at noon. I had to call her back later and tell her we might not make it. Donna said she'd hold the boat for 5 minutes but no longer which is fair, others were on the tour. We arrived at 12:04PM and Donna was waiting to show us where to park. We apologized to the others on the tour and we got on the boat and headed to the island.
It's about a 10 minute trip on a small pontoon style boat. Refreshments are not provided but you can bring your own water or soda as long as you are careful.
Donna told us a little about the area. When we arrived at the home, her father Joe met us and took us into the cottage which was built during Frank Lloyd Wright's life. He explained about the island, how the prior owner in the 1940s contacted Wright and had him come out to make plans for the home. The cottage was built and the plans for the home were made. I won't get into more detail about these things as that's all in the tour.
We then were brought into the home which the Massimo family had built using the FLW plans which they live in. We were taken through almost all areas of the home. Joe, who had the home built in 2008, talked about some of the experiences and then ran a 3-D image video of himself talking about his personal history, how he ended up buying the island, how he built the house and the various challenges he had including with the Frank Lloyd Wright foundation. While some might find the details a bit much, it was interesting and it runs less than 15 minutes.
Joe then took us outside to view other portions of the home (ask him about the ice trucker experience while building the house) and back inside where Donna took over and lead us through the various bedrooms and other features. At the end, they let us roam the home and property for about 10-15 minutes before heading back to the boat. There is a bathroom in the home for guests to use.
I was particularly impressed by the various materials used. The woods in the home are very handsome and some of the construction techniques are interesting to hear about, such as how the cantilever was done without structural steel.
The home is very well maintained as they do live there for much of the year. The tours usually stop at the end of October and start up again a few months later, depending on the weather.
The entire tour, not including the boat each way, lasted just under 90 minutes. The price is not cheap, $150 per person, but I'd say particularly for those who appreciate Frank Lloyd Wright's work, it's worth it.
After the tour, we went across the street to Dino's Coffee Shop. They have sandwiches, desserts, crepes, coffee and more. We had a light snack (coffee, toasted bagel and a meat Burek which is like a very large rectangular empanada but with flaky pastry) and it was quite good. You can eat in, there are a few tables, or take out.
