The best trip in Crete: truffle dogs, stunning views, perfect hospitality and cheer!

点评：We wanted to do something unique and special while in Crete, and the truffle hunting tour with Nikolaos and his family was absolutely life-changing. Nikolaos, the famous truffle hunter of Crete, and his daughters, Anthi Moscha and Eleni, made us feel instantly welcome. Before our visit, Anthi Moscha was wonderfully communicative, accommodating, and ensured everything was perfectly arranged for our trip.
The tour began with stunning views and a warm welcome from their amazing dogs, Manto and Kala, before heading into the beautiful Rouvas Forest. As we made our way down to the Rouvas Forest, we passed goats and sheep and beautiful forest trees. We stopped at the valley, where there is a church and the stunning location used for regional festivals. It was a short walk to the site and we were quickly fed a delicious Cretan breakfast. We enjoyed a delicious homemade breakfast, which include cheese made by their mother, and Eleni’s handpicked herbal tea, followed by a scenic walk where the dogs found two truffles despite the dry season! We learned about truffle hunting traditions, the forest’s history, and Crete’s rich culture.
Afterward, we feasted on fresh garden tomatoes, generous plates of truffle pasta, homemade wine, and their family’s special raki, ending with local honey and fruit for dessert. We also visited a herder’s shelter and their village shop. Their honey is truly the best I’ve ever had, and wish I could have packed many jars home with me.
The Kapsalis family made us feel like part of their family from beginning to end. This wasn’t just a tour—it was a day filled with warmth, laughter, and the genuine hospitality of Crete. I will never forget this day, the lovely conversations we had, the history and culture we learned, and the happiness from two truffle dogs. This was the best tour I’ve ever taken, and worth every cent and not to be missed!
