点评:An incredibly well-maintained and fascinating museum (and private residence!). Definitely worth the journey out to the coast to what looks like a nondescript golfcourse clubhouse...and a door, and some steps....and then a long, long sloping tunnel down to the blast doors.
The size and complexity of what lies beneath is impressive, as is the state of preservation and quality of maintenance. Considering this is a private museum open a few times a year and staffed by volunteers, the labour of love that must be involved in keeping it in this condition is admirable.
The videos and static displays are well-chosen and informative, with grim atmospheric audio playing in the background as you explore (and exploration is rewarding). Talking to the volunteers was fascinating, given they used to work here - asking Arthur if he knew what he would have done if things had ever "kicked off", stayed with family above ground or reported for duty knowing he'd be leaving them to die...
Not a criticism, but suggestion for potential improvement - given the photography restrictions, it would be great to have had the chance to buy some postcards of some of the main areas, or even a "Wish you were here" from the pub ;) Perhaps you could allow photography in a couple of supervised points as people walk round? I'd have loved a family pic by the blast doors.
Some of the information on the walls, particularly the photography project with ex-staff, could perhaps be collected into a booklet, or even a book? The quality of the history information within the site is great, and might not take too much effort to collect and publish...?
Thanks again - didn't get to meet John, but hats off for making such a lunatic decision to buy the place, and for making it accessible. Told my dad about our visit, and as he often does he revealed that he'd done 3 weeks training at Partington in 1954, and described the walk down to the bunker....Cold Warriors keep their secrets for a long time.
