点评:A friendly start, followed by tourist traps, shopping commissions and a tour cut short
We met Nuwan in Kandy, and at first, he seemed like a genuinely friendly, welcoming and trustworthy person. He was smiling, easy to talk to, and gave us the impression that we were about to have a great experience exploring the city.
Unfortunately, things turned out very differently.
Before starting the tour, I explicitly showed him a written message explaining that we were not interested in tourist traps, shopping stops or places designed to pressure tourists into buying things. We simply wanted to explore Kandy and enjoy the places we had agreed to visit.
He seemed to ignore the message completely.
One of our first stops was an Ayurvedic centre, where we were taken through a treatment and massage experience, followed by a carefully prepared sales pitch. It was exactly the kind of tourist-oriented experience we had specifically asked to avoid.
We politely declined to buy anything.
As we were leaving, we noticed something rather revealing: Nuwan apologised to the person running the Ayurvedic centre because we hadn’t purchased anything.
That was our first indication that this tour might have been more about getting tourists to spend money than actually showing them Kandy.
But what happened next was even more disappointing.
While we were back in the tuk-tuk, Nuwan had a conversation with someone. We travel with a translation device that allows us to understand and communicate with local people, and during that conversation, we heard him explaining that he would cut our tour short because we weren’t spending money at the shopping stops.
Yes, you read that correctly.
We had booked what was supposed to be a six-hour tour for 2,000 Sri Lankan rupees.
After approximately two hours, Nuwan suddenly told us that the famous Big Buddha, the large white Buddha statue overlooking Kandy, was closed.
Spoiler: it wasn’t closed.
Instead of continuing the agreed itinerary, he took us to a temple, ended the tour and demanded 1,000 rupees.
Now, let’s think about that for a moment.
The original agreement was 2,000 rupees for six hours. We received approximately two hours, part of which had been spent at a tourist-oriented Ayurvedic centre that we had explicitly asked not to visit.
And somehow, we were still expected to pay half the original price.
The amount itself wasn’t the problem. We’re talking about a relatively small sum of money. What bothered us was the behaviour, the wasted time and the complete disregard for what we had agreed upon.
Based on what we heard during his conversation and how the tour ended immediately afterwards, we were left with the strong impression that the tour was shortened because we weren’t going to generate any additional income through shopping stops.
I cannot confirm what financial arrangements he has with these businesses, but the experience certainly gave us reason to question his priorities.
There’s also something rather ironic about this whole situation.
During the tour, Nuwan took us to a Buddhist temple and spoke about Buddha and karma.
I found it interesting to hear someone talk about karma and Buddhist teachings while behaving towards his customers in a way that, in our experience, showed very little honesty or respect.
And here’s something I’d genuinely like to say to him.
Nuwan, if you ever have the opportunity to visit Italy, my home country, I sincerely hope you have a wonderful experience. I hope the people you meet treat you fairly, respect your time and make you feel welcome, without seeing you as someone they can simply make money from.
Because that’s exactly how we would have liked to be treated in your country.
Sri Lanka is a beautiful place, and we’ve met some genuinely wonderful people here. Experiences like this are disappointing precisely because they can leave visitors questioning the intentions of people who initially seem so kind.
My advice to anyone visiting Kandy:
If this driver approaches you on the street offering a tuk-tuk tour, think carefully before agreeing.
If your idea of exploring Kandy involves being driven between tourist shops, massage centres and places where you’re encouraged to buy things you never wanted in the first place, then perhaps he’s the right driver for you.
But if you want to discover the city, visit the places you’ve agreed upon and spend your time with someone who respects your preferences, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
A friendly smile is a great way to start a tour. Unfortunately, it doesn’t guarantee an honest experience.
And in our case, the experience was deeply disappointing.
