点评:What a magical time we had spending 3 days observing these wonderful animals as they went about their daily activities. No, they are not in the wild; they are living in a sanctuary to keep them safe so they are not totally free. The center has about 27 elephants living on about 6000 hectares- not enough land - they are trying to obtain more. The goal of the center is to rescue (from logging, entertainment, etc), rehabilitate (both physical and psychological injuries), reproduce (trying to keep the Asian Elephant gene pool viable), re-herd, re-educate (both local villagers and mahouts), and re-wild (they have been able to reintroduce 4 elephants into the wild - this overall is wishful in that land is coming less and less available without true governmental and local support).
Getting to experience the elephants was fantastic, but the accommodations were also quite nice and the food was simple but tasty, especially the curry. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful, gracious and appreciative. The center’s main source of income is through visitors.
The worst thing was the ride to the center- not their fault of course - but the road between Luang Prabang and the center is terrible. Go!
