点评:Monday 19th January we visited this beautiful old Cathedral in heart of the Vegueta, the old part of the City.
It's construction commenced in 1500 and took nearly four centuries to complete, it was operational long before that. Due to the length of time to finish the Cathedral has three architectural styles, Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassical, which are clearly visible inside and outside the building.
Before entering the Cathedral we stood in front of it in Plaza Santa to admire the building. The most striking features were the two large bell towers on either side with the arched structure in the middle. These were later additions to the Cathedral.
We paid the entrance fee of €2.40 each and an additional €1.50 to visit the Cathedral's Tower.
On entering the building the first thing that struck us was the vast size and height.
Looking up at the ornate ceiling which comprised of vaulted arches, supported by stone columns, it was lined with stone work that resembled palm leaves. It did create and impressive spectacle.
From the entrance we made our way into the main section of the Cathedral. As we made our way around we passed a number of ornate shrines, statues, memorials and other religious images.
From the information leaflet we were able to identify the listed features, rather a lot, which included statues of San Fernando, San Gregorio,
Santisimo Sacramento (Blessed Sacrement), Virgen de Antigua, Altar Mayor, San José, Nostra Senora de los Dolores, Santa Teresa and San Pedro. They are listed in the order we walked around the Cathedral following the guide map.
Having spent some time being amazed walking around the Cathedral we the climbed the steps up the Tower, there is a lift available. From here, Mirador Santa Ana there were impressive views around the City's skyline and Plaza Ana below.
We exited the Cathedral walking through the Garden, Patio de los Naranjos which is home to the sculpture Disco Tensione, reviewed separately. We also passed the Museum and
Souvenir shop.
