点评:Visited Bamburgh in Dec 2025, hoping to learn more about the history of the place and the Northumberland coastline in general. The added bonus of Christmas at the castle sounded wonderful, so we happily paid the £20/person admission and walked inside.
It was soon revealed that the most informative part of the trip was in fact the timeline banner that could be read for free, before entering the ticket office. Once inside, there was little to do apart from walk around the ramparts, or head to the one open part of the castle to witness Christmas, as dreamt up by "renowned set designer, Charlotte Lloyd Webber".
Mrs Lloyd Webber appears to have done a lot of coasting on her family name, the decorations that greeted us would have been fantastic for a children's party, not so much befitting such a stately setting already adorned with examples of the pinnacles of human artistry.
The decor hid a great deal of the rooms and distracted from their contents (very little of which touched on anything pre-victorian, despite how much history the castle has). Most of the decoration appears to have been mainly sourced from Home Bargins, with spray painted monkey statues, plastic tinsel and other tat.
The worst part was the inclusion of AI-generated slop as included in some of the backdrops to the Christmas experience. In a place built by artisans and sporting the best in human art, it is frankly insulting to have the blind hand of generative AI have its works displayed alongside those of human master craftsmen.
I doubt Bamburgh Castle are aware of the use of AI within the "artworks" of the Lloyd Webber team, but it is present. Look for distorted door handles, shape-shifting animated skulls, knights that look like aliens and piles of gold that blend into nonsensical squiggles upon close inspection. You have paid for "artwork" that is intrinsically built on plagiarism due to its inclusion of generative AI content.
All in all, I won't be paying to return!
