点评:The 1988 bronze statue of Flemish folk hero Willem van Saeftinghe is to be found close to the church of Lissewege. William, a lay brother in the local Cistercian abbey, took part in the legendary 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs, opposing untrained members of the Flemish craft guilds on foot to a professional force of patrician Flemish and French cavalry. The cavalry lost. William is said to have killed many knights. He also dragged the French commander, count Robert II of Artois, off his horse, whereupon the Flemish slayed him. Sculptor Jef Claerhout (1937–2022) represented William as a fierce giant brandishing an impressive Broadsword and holding a morning star in his left hand. He is towering over tiny men on foot and knights on horseback. Like with other sculptures by Claerhout we saw elsewhere (Zeus, Leda, Prometheus, and Pegasus in Bruges, and The Fountain of Wisdom in Leuven), there is a comical element to this one.
