点评:I enjoyed my visit to Houmas House on the River Road between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. This was one of five plantations homes on the River Road we toured.
The home and the grounds are impressive. Our tour guide was very good. The owner of the house has collected some interesting items. Because the collection and furnishings are eclectic, the other houses we visited on the River Road provided a better/more consistent sense of what a plantation house looked like "in its day."
Far more so than the other houses we visited, this site feels like it has been developed as an events center. More effort has been put into the gardens and event spaces (e.g., restaurants) than at other houses we visited. I did not feel the state of the gardens made them a compelling destination on their own. We were there in October, so perhaps the gardens are much more impressive in the Spring. Based on what we saw in October, the $20 price just to tour the gardens did not seem good value.
We had dinner at one of the on-site restaurants, the Carriage House. The setting was fun. The food was good. The service was very friendly. The prices were reasonable. If touring the house around dinner time, I would recommend getting diner there too. If one has a reservation for dinner (and you don't feel a need to tour the house), I believe one can tour the gardens at no (additional) charge.
A great feature of this house is that it gives tours until late in the day, after many other homes along the River Road have closed. If planning a full day of touring along the River Road from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, this can make a good final stop for a tour and dinner.
At $35, the house tour seems overpriced. This was the most expensive of the five houses we toured on the River Road. While the house is impressive and tour guide is good, I did not feel this was a better experience that merited paying more than other houses. If your schedule and budget only afford you time to tour two or three houses on the River Road, I would not prioritize Houmas House - because of the price (and the more eclectic nature of decorations). I would focus instead on Oak Alley, Laura Plantation, etc. If you do have enough time and the $35 tour price is not a deterrent, then I would recommend including Houmas House as well.
