Honor the great man, Frederick Douglass, with your presence at his home, Cherry Hill

点评：The importance of Frederick Douglass to American history and MY PERSONAL ABILITY TO VOTE as a woman, wasn't something I was tuned into until I read his slave narrative, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. If you are a US citizen of any demographic, I would recommend to you reading this book immediately. It's short, doesn't take long, and is deeply inspiring. Thank God, slavery is over! From the first page, the insanity of it all was apparent.
His gallantry working toward women's right to vote was further celebrated during the 200th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. I swore if I ever got to DC again, this is the first thing I would go see so I could pay my respects to the great man.
Thirdly, in his Narrative he wrote the greatest description of why any human being should become a reader. If you do, you will forever be free! He understood instantly when he heard a master say that anyone who could read was ''unfit to be a slave,'' that he should immediately deepen his skills in doing exactly that.
It's astonishing to go see Cherry Hill and to imagine that someone was able to go from slavery to this gorgeous home upon a hill. Two huge trees have been planted in the front yard, I assume to shade the place, but in Douglass' day he had an unimpeded view of the US Capitol and the Washington Monument (was the Monument existing back then? IDK) from his front porch. How cool is that?
The gift shop is terrific. Great books! Another visitor told me the movie was old and dated and best suited for children and to watch the PBS biography on their website instead. It would be much better, she said. I thought the movie was old, but still fine. I would recommend making a handout for people of all the Frederick Douglass sites across the country (Baltimore, Seneca Falls, Rochester, NY, etc.) to be available at the site
Frederick Douglass is THE MAN! This historic site did not disappoint and the staff had other recommendations of places to see. On the 4th of July, they have recitations at the site of his 'What to the Slave is the 4th of July?' speech.
Franklin Morris Jr. is the great-great-great-grandson of Douglass. Franklin Morris Jr. is also related to Booker T. Washington, another influential figure in African American history, being his great-great-grandson. Here's a great video explaining how that happened. Morris has a campaign via the Frederick Douglass Foundation to distribute 1,000,000 copies of Frederick Douglass' Narrative in a special commemorative edition. Enjoy this video.
