点评:If hiking is your thing, and you are in New Zealand’s Northern Island, you should never miss the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It is truly a fantastic adventure and a memory to cherish for the rest of your life.
The crossing trail starts at Mangatepopo Road, and the first part of the hike is rather flat - and very scenic. But once you start up the Devil’s Staircase, it becomes quite steep for quite a while. Then comes the South Crater moonscape before the final push to the top, and then the Red Crater/ Blue Lake vistas, which were probably my favourite part. The hike ends at Ketetahi car park and the descent, while offering some more amazing views, is partially covered in forest and winding forever - this is why going this direction (rather than from Ketetahi) makes a lot of sense.
A hat, sunblock, plenty of water and a supply of snacks are all must-haves here, as is some decent level of fitness - the hike takes over 7h and can be really taxing at times. It really helps to read the website/ map, and to make the most of it - I would advise to book the experience with a tour operator. During the shoulder season, a group of 10-15 can easily navigate the trail without too much squeeze.
