Klein Constantia is an institution, and Vin de Constance is a wine many of our international clients specifically seek out. We were genuinely excited to treat our Spanish associate to a Sunday lunch at the estate. In advance, we tried calling several times to make a reservation, but unfortunately no one answered. We therefore decided to drive through and try our luck.
After some difficulty finding parking, we were informed upon arrival that the restaurant was fully booked. We were offered a waiting list with an estimated hour’s wait, which we were perfectly happy to accept. We then proceeded to the tasting room, hoping to wait there. Regrettably, the lady assisting us was notably unaccommodating and informed us that tastings were also fully booked.
We politely asked whether we could simply wait somewhere with a glass of wine. We were told that wine was not available by the glass in that area—or any other. We even offered to purchase a bottle, which was also declined.
Our guest was left astonished that a willing and paying group of visitors could not be accommodated in ANY capacity…neither to sit, nor to dine, nor to taste, nor even to wait comfortably. Warmth and hospitality, too, seemed absent from the menu. The overall attitude felt indifferent and dismissive, which is a great pity given the estate’s remarkable reputation.
A place of such heritage and global acclaim deserves a front-of-house experience to match. I truly hope this was an exception rather than the norm.
