点评:We did the self guided tour around the thermal area.
The walk was very pleasant, but there was not a lot to see. Quite a let down. At the start of our walk, we passed some rundown houses then a loop to see a mud pool that was partially obscured by bushes, and it seemed barely active. But the very large steaming pool nearby was interesting and the walkway goes through this. There is a small beautiful blue pond inside the larger lake, beside this walkway. Next there is a hike up the hill through bush to a smaller lake following a steep track made slippery with tiny stones. At the lookout, the view over the area including Rotorua was lovely. However the track and tall scrub hid some of the views.
The overall impression was that the area was very tired and not well maintained. Clearly the focus of the business was in the more expensive cultural experience.
Toilets were indicated on our map, but they were locked. Really?
The thermal walk cannot compare with Waimangu or Waiotapu.
There is a boiling mud lake just off the highway on the Waiotapu road that is really boiling. And it’s free!
