点评:A maritime museum may sound dull, but that is not the case with this place.
There are three main components:
- the type of canoes and navigation used by the Maori folk on their colonization of the land (a mere 700 years ago.) This focused on the technology aspects, and much less on (the expected) aboriginal creation fairy stories.
- the ships used by the Europeans (predominantly Captain Cook) for mapping the coastline 250 years ago; for transporting settlers; and - in the twentieth century - for NZ's contribution to the British Empire's global navy.
- The America's Cup challenges over the years - including the actual yacht; Black Magic; that won the cup in 1995. This America's Cup section is the biggest part of the exhibits.
The presentations are well curated, the quality of the exhibits is high, and there are a lot of them !.
My wife an I dropped in with the intention of spending just an hour or so, and we stayed most of the day. (There is an excellent cafe on level 1, so don't fret about suffering from lack of nutrition and hydration on your visit)
Auckland tourist attractions are expensive, but the maritime museum is ridiculously cheap - only about $25 a head. It's a great place to visit.
