点评：I had a wonderful time on the free guided walk at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne on Sunday, led by the fantastic Mary. She was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the gardens and their history.
The tour focused on the remarkable collection of old trees from around the world, and Mary brought each one to life with stories and context. One standout moment was at the northern end of the Fern Gully, where she showed us a massive Cypress tree over 2 metres wide — all eight of us held hands to measure its circumference! It was such a fun and memorable way to appreciate the scale and age of these giants.
Along the walk we spotted baby dragon trees, majestic old gum trees, oak trees, and even ginkgo trees with the incredible history of having survived the Hiroshima bombings. Mary also shared fascinating stories about bamboo species that flowered simultaneously around the world and then died, which was something I’d never heard before.
The walk was relaxed, informative, and perfectly paced, and Mary made sure everyone felt included and welcome. I’d highly recommend this free guided tour to locals and visitors alike — it’s a beautiful way to experience the gardens and learn just how globally significant this collection really is.
