Castello di San Giusto的点评
点评:The Castle of San Giusto is a fortress and a medieval castle. The name comes from the patron saint of Trieste--the Just of Trieste-- who became a martyr under emperor Diocletien in 303 (estimate).
Built over 200 years between 1471 and 1630 by Venitians and Hapsburgs. Inside it has an armory, lapidarium, and a church. I did read that the location has been inhabited since 2000 BC. There is a very good video during the visit that shows the city evolution from back then to the current day. Very impressed with the preservation of the edifice and it still hosts events. The open courtyard at the top inside the ramparts and building is very large.
The collection of weapons and the variety of each type of weapon on display is quite overwhelming. From swords to halberds and guns one could spend hours studying each. The furniture on display with intricate carvings with other Trieste artifacts is also great to see and how a single person, Giuseppe Caprin, managed to save so much of the history to be displayed in the castle.
You must visit the Lapidarium as it contains many stone monuments with Roman inscriptions and statues from the theater, urns, and sarcophagi bearing the names of Trieste’s ancient inhabitants. It also has mosaic displays.
The castle is probably the best place to get views of the city Trieste--just great bird's eye view of the entire port, city, water front, gulf, and hills in the back.
Just go!
