I've been a regular visitor to The Gambia over the years—four trips so far—and I’ve always found it the perfect destination for both experienced and inexperienced birders alike. I’m now planning my next trip, but before I go, I thought I’d share some of my experiences and tips.
The Gambia is a welcoming country, though culturally it’s worlds apart from Europe. The food is excellent—consistently so—and I’ve never had any issues with stomach upsets. The people are warm and friendly, sometimes a little too forward, but always kind and helpful.
As for birding, you could go without a guide, but to really get the most from your trip, a guide is essential. A good guide isn’t just someone who knows the birds inside out; he also becomes your companion, driver, and, in many ways, your security throughout your stay.
On my first trip I was fortunate to meet an incredibly talented young man. More than 10 years later, he has become one of the top guides in the region, not just in The Gambia but also in Senegal. On my most recent trip he took me into Senegal, where he spent a week driving me to some of the best birding sites. In just 10 days I managed to photograph 219 species.
We travelled in comfort in his air-conditioned Mercedes van, staying in lodges he had arranged in advance. He picked me up from Banjul airport and dropped me back at the end of my trip—every detail, including accommodation, was taken care of.
