Healing soil for your afflictions? Perhaps....

点评：This is a major pilgrimage site for thousands. It more or less started in the early 1800s when (this is one version) Bernardo Abeyta saw a bright light radiating from the ground. He dug and found a crucifix which he gave to the priest. But the next day it was gone, he again saw the light and recovered the crucifix. Next day, it was gone from the priest and Bernardo dug it up again. Now he said he was guided to build a small chapel and exact spot from which he dug up the cross became a healing place for believers to rub the dirt on themselves. Now this place slowly expanded but it was kept within his family for a couple generations who survived on offerings left by the pilgrims. In the late 1920s, financial problems forced his great granddaughter to sell it to the diocese which for decades wanted to own this place. We were there during a quiet period but evidently on certain holy days, it is swamped with pilgrims. Some of them carrying heavy wooden crosses and literally walking miles to arrive here. Whether or not the "healing dirt" works---well, there are hundreds and hundreds of testimonies and photos attributing their healing to it. Some even compare Chimayo to Lourdes of France. There is a small snack bar with simple meals available and a museum. As an aside note, later at our hotel I met an English woman and friends who actually came to New Mexico specifically to visit the chapel and rub dirt on themselves as one of them had cancer. I hope that it worked for them.
