点评:Although the City of Rhodes was founded around 400BCE, the Medieval Transformation occurred from 1309 to 1522. The Ottoman [Turks] Period was from 1522 to 1912—four centuries! Medieval City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site [since 1988] renowned as the oldest inhabited medieval city in Europe. During the Medieval Transformation, Knights of Saint John constructed the Palace of the Grand Master and expanded the walls, which extend about 2.6 miles around the city. The Ottomans maintained and enhanced the fortifications. Medieval city consists of the upper and lower towns. I found walking the streets difficult. Dark river rocks are placed vertically in cement, as depicted in the accompanying photo, instead of traditional European cobblestones. I believe this feature was added within the past decade. A small item that delighted me: A flautist dressed in flowing medieval attire tooted her horn with melodic tunes, including “Scarborough Fair.” A photo of her accompanies this review. I carry a small leather coin purse when traveling in Europe, which doesn’t have currency notes in small denominations. I keep several €1 and €2 coins. I approached the flautist and emptied the coins into her collection basket. She bowed to me while continuing to entertain passersby. She also gave me a wink☺
