An atmospheric rainy safari that surprised us — full of wild, offbeat charm!

点评：We didn't let a sudden heavy rain stop our Yala adventure: we climbed straight into our open safari truck and set off to wander the huge, untamed stretches of this legendary Sri Lankan national park. The rain soaked the red earth, softened the edges of the jungle trees, and turned the whole park into a misty, quiet world that felt far more intimate than a crowded sunny safari.
Even in the downpour, we still had fantastic wildlife encounters: dozens of spotted deer gathered near the water pools, massive horned water buffalo wallowing happily in the mud, vivid wild peacocks strutting right past our jeep, a camouflaged crocodile resting half-buried in the dry soil, and distant elephants moving slowly through the tree line. We spent 3 full hours bouncing along the dirt tracks, stopping to take photos every few minutes through the rain-fogged air.
The only small letdown: we searched high and low but never found a clear leopard footprint, a little disappointing as Yala is famous for its high leopard density. We also noticed the total number of active animals was a bit lower than we had anticipated, likely a side effect of the heavy rain keeping some creatures hidden deeper in the brush.
All in all this was such a special, one-of-a-kind safari. The wild, moody landscapes we got to experience on this rainy day are something most standard sunny tours never get to see, and the feeling of exploring this huge living wilderness from the back of the jeep is something we'll remember for ages.
P/S: so if your top priority is checking off a long wildlife list, you might want to book an early morning full-day tour for better animal activity.
