Private boat option is worth it (and surprisingly affordable)

点评：Short version
We were a group of 4 people. We traveled from Hanoi to Halong Bay to Ninh Binh. We booked several things through Si (HaLong KAB Travel). He arranged for a private luxury limo van (9 seats) from Hanoi to Halong Bay and also from Halong Bay to Ninh Binh. He arranged to a private boat, which was a full-size boat and included lunch and hotel pick up and drop off. He also picked us up early our last morning to drive us to breakfast to eat squid cake banh cuon, the local specialty. Communication was clear throughout. He speaks English very well. And he responds quickly.
Longer version
My wife and I met my mom and a friend in Hanoi. My mom requested that we go to Halong Bay. However, my wife didn't want to stay overnight on a boat and I had heard that Halong Bay can be crowded. We had initially planned to stay in Windham Garden Sonasea in Van Don and take a cruise of Bai Tu Long Bay. However, that was further from both Hanoi and Ninh Binh (our next destination). So we decided to stay in Halong City and take a day cruise to Lan Ha Bay. But there are so many cruises and my family was not interested in a party boat or a crowded boat or stops.
So just out of curiosity I started to see if private charters were an affordable option. And I stumbled on a conversation when someone recommended to contact a guy (Si) at HaLong KAB Travel. So I did... and Si explained various options for the various bays and boats. He assured me that if we took a private boat that Halong Bay would not be crowded as it will take a different route than all the cruises. My wife didn't want to be in a small boat. Our boat is a full-size boat set up for the larger cruises, but we had it to ourselves. We also had the option of changing the itinerary which was important to me in case of bad weather, seasickness, or any other reason we might want to go back early.
Everyone in our party was happy to be on a private boat. Everything was planned and worked like clockwork. We were able to chose morning or afternoon start times. Then we were picked up at our hotel and driven directly to the dock (no circling to pick up others). Once there, Si greeted up and took us through the terminal (where others were queueing to buy tickets or meet their tours or whatever). We just walk past them straight to and on our boat. And then left. All the registration was taken care of ahead of time.
We cruised around and didn't run into any crowded areas. We stopped at a cave where we saw only a few other tourists. Most of the time, it was just us. We stopped at a stop to kayak into another cave, but the tide was too low, so we just had a bamboo boat ride around the area. There were a couple other boats here but not crowded (no waiting).
We opted to have lunch included. It seemed a bit expensive (in Vietnam terms) but I knew we'd want to eat something. It turned out to be a huge spread (maybe 7 or 8 courses) of mostly fresh seafood. My wife is pretty picky about her seafood, but she said this was the best meal we had in Halong, Hanoi, or Ninh Binh. Drinks were not included though, so she was a bit surprised to pay for coconuts.
Initially I only contacted Si to book the boat, but later I asked him to book our ride from Hanoi to Halong City. I wanted to ride in a luxury limo like I'd seen in travel vlogs but I also wanted the fastest way. Even with hotel pick up, it seems there would be a lot of added time picking others up. So we hired a private one. Our car was maybe not the most luxurious one. I mentioned to Si and he made sure the next one (Halong to Ninh Binh) was better, and it was. There were some issues with the pick up (only issues we had with anything he booked) but it was good having Si, as he could make all the calls to the car company. If I had booked directly on my own, I would have had to scramble. So it's definitely worth it to have someone else doing the booking.
Last thoughts
If you are on a strict budget, then you will probably just stick with the larger tours. Also if you are young and want a party boat with drinks that goes to the normal tourist stops, then you also might like the larger tours. But if you have a little more budget, don't want the party, and just want to tour peacefully without crowds, this is an ideal way to do it. The price was much less than I expected. In fact, with 4 people, I think it was just like double (per person cost) and in line with many (non-private) tours we've taken in other destinations.
I wish the boat stopped at Titop Island where you can hike to see the view from above, but I knew ahead of time that we weren't making all the tourist stops (also like fishing villages, etc). The only disappointing thing was that the tides were too low so we couldn't kayak or take a bamboo boat into the cave. So we just went around the bay a bit. So maybe if you do this, ask about the tides when picking the morning or afternoon time slot. Overall, though, we were very happy to have chosen this private tour (and the lunch). The boat, the food, and the price were all good and everything was as promised. And Si was very helpful and friendly.

我们选择了包含午餐的套餐。价格似乎有点贵（以越南的物价来说），但我知道我们肯定想吃点东西。结果发现这是一顿丰盛的大餐（大概有七八道菜），大部分都是新鲜海鲜。我妻子对海鲜很挑剔，但她说这是我们在下龙湾、河内和宁平吃过的最棒的一餐。不过饮料不包含在内，所以她对椰子要额外付费感到有点意外。
起初我只是联系Si预订船票，后来又让他帮我们预订从河内到下龙市的交通工具。我想坐那种在旅游vlog里看到的豪华轿车，但也想选择最快的路线。即使酒店接送，似乎也会因为接其他人而耽误不少时间。所以我们包了一辆车。我们的车可能不是最豪华的。我跟Si提了一下，他确保下一辆（从下龙湾到宁平）的车更好，事实也的确如此。接车的时候出了点问题（这是我们在他预订的所有服务中唯一遇到的问题），但幸好有Si帮忙，因为他可以负责所有与租车公司的联系。如果我自己直接预订，肯定会手忙脚乱。所以找人帮忙预订绝对物有所值。
最后想说的是：
如果你预算有限，那可能只能选择大型旅行团了。如果你年轻，想要那种有酒水、可以去常规旅游景点的派对游船，那么大型旅行团可能也适合你。但如果你预算更充裕，不想参加派对，只想避开人群，享受一段宁静的旅程，那么这种方式就非常理想。价格比我预想的要低得多。事实上，我们四个人，人均价格大概只翻了一倍，跟我们之前在其他地方参加过的许多（非私人）旅行团的价格差不多。
我希望游船能在蒂托普岛停靠，在那里可以徒步俯瞰美景，但我事先就知道我们不会去所有景点（比如渔村等等）。唯一令人失望的是潮水太低，我们没法划皮划艇或乘坐竹筏进入洞穴。所以我们只能在海湾里转转。所以，如果你也打算去，最好在选择上午或下午的时间段时询问一下潮汐情况。不过总的来说，我们非常高兴选择了这次私人旅行（以及午餐）。船、食物和价格都很好，一切都如承诺的那样。而且Si非常热情友好，乐于助人。
