点评:Monteriggioni is completely encircled by imposing defensive walls and a series of 14 towers that were built in the 13th century and still stand today.
The walls are the main about 10 meters high and you can walk around the top of them.
We had planned to do this but it was such a hot day when we visited and the walkways at the top of the walls are so exposed that we decided not to. I was reluctant to give up on the idea as this was the main reason I was visiting the town but it really was too hot. I’d recommend visiting on a cooler day.
Even from the ground, the walls are still very impressive. As we drove towards the town, it looked like a fortress, perched high on the hill. We entered through Porta Franca, one of just two ancient stone gateways that allowed access to Monteriggioni.
The town is small enough that everywhere we walked, we were surrounded by the walls and towers. It felt as if we were stepping back in time and we could easily imagine that this was how it all looked in medieval times.
