点评:I went with a group and we were not necessarily prepared for what we were about to see. It was a very cold day and it’s even colder along the waterside. We had lunch, coffee and pastries at the only cafe there. All the food and drinks were lovely (and the restrooms are clean and wifi free).
Fortunately, we went with a guide. There is so much history there that we would have missed if we had gone on our own. The sculptures tell an important story and the street art signs reveal a lot about the time period. The memorial is very similar to the U.S. Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC.
The location is serene but it is telling a very ugly and sad history. Go with the right mindset and be respectful.
It takes courage to shine a light on the evils of the past, to denounce them and to teach future generations not to repeat them. It is important not to sweep these stories under the rug but to acknowledge what happened and to have a place to remember the lives of those who were taken.
