A key historic site in the development of the VDL Company and white settlement in Tasmania.
Highfield Historic Site的点评
点评:The colonial heritage of Australia is fascinating, and Highfield is no exception. As the focus of the VDL Company in Tasmania, and the de facto ‘law of the land’ in the Tasmanian NW for many years after white settlement, this is indeed an historic site. Even more compelling is the restoration that has been undertaken in the past three or four decades. This site may have been lost to history had it not been for the extensive restoration and interpretive signage that has taken place and given Highfield a new lease on life with Parks & Wildlife. The photos of the buildings in the 1980s give testament to the work that been undertaken. And it’s not just the house - the outbuildings were used variously as the local church, school, with barns, stables and boiling house (next to the styles). Entry is usually $15 per person, although free on the day we arrived (something about a power outage and no eftpos facilities). There’s plenty of parking, and a small rose garden. You’d be crazy not to visit if you’re in the area.
