点评:We came to experience something of the Ainu culture, but unfortunately our time was very limited by the timing of the bus from/to Kushiro station, which effectively gave us about 3 hours on the ground once we’d finished lunch.
The main village strip consisted of souvenir shops and a few eateries, and felt very touristic, though the wood carvings on display in some shops were very impressive. Ducking into a cafe to escape the rain, we tried a small slice of Ainu cuisine in potche (fermented potato cakes) and Ainu tea, being too full after a ramen lunch for the mains. (However, these mostly involved venison, and I’m not much of a red meat eater.)
There are some small museums and a theatre for Ainu dances and plays, but we didn’t have time to take these in, unfortunately, as Master 12 was keen to walk by the lake and we needed to make sure we arrived at the bus terminal early to ensure a spot on the local bus back to Kushiro. I would recommend staying here for a couple of days, if at all possible, to better appreciate the cultural offerings and natural beauty of the area.
