Crab Key is absolutely worth the trip, and getting there is part of the charm.

点评：I hired a small fiberglass motorboat, and two local guys picked us up early in the morning and took us across calm, glassy water. When you arrive, it’s immediately clear why the area is protected. Crab Key is a natural park, and a ranger (I believe her name was Miss Bush) comes out to give a brief orientation—no smoking, no drones, respect the island. It’s straightforward and no-nonsense. And yes, they sell ice-cold Colombian beer.
This is not a polished, resort-style experience, and that’s important to understand going in. The island is rural, operations are simple, and service is functional rather than performative. Things move at their own pace. If you’re comfortable with that—and you should be—everything feels authentic and grounded.
There are rough wooden steps and natural trails, so good hiking shoes or water shoes are a must. A short climb brings you to an overlook with some of the most striking Caribbean blues imaginable; layered, luminous, and almost unreal.
Providencia itself is only seven miles long, yet it sits alongside a massive barrier reef, and you really feel that scale here. Crab Key is an excellent spot to snorkel, dive off the pier, or just sit quietly with a beer and take it all in.
Afterward, our boat captain took us barracuda fishing near Santa Catalina along the edge of the reef. We caught two barracuda and a small lobster—an unforgettable experience, but it also made me think about sustainability. Places like this stay special only if they’re protected, and a little restraint goes a long way.
All in all, Crab Key offers one of the most genuine underwater Caribbean experiences you can have; raw, colorful, and alive. Bring your GoPro. You’ll want proof these colors actually exist.
