Great site, poor management! Red my review to know more.
Palácio e Parque Biester的点评
点评：Biester Palace in Sintra isn’t as “Instagram-famous” as other sites, and that’s actually what makes it worth visiting—it’s less crowded and has a calmer atmosphere. The house is very colorful, though to call it a “palace” feels like an exaggeration.
I’m giving it 5 stars only in comparison with other tourist sites I’ve visited in Lisbon and Sintra. Otherwise, the same issue appears here as in many Portuguese attractions: ticket prices are high (often more than in Paris, Rome, or Florence), but there’s hardly any information provided. No proper self-guided tours, no historical background—so you end up learning very little on site. My point is: you are paying money to enter, and they don’t even care to make sure you gain knowledge from the visit.
What you do get is constant emphasis on the Johnny Depp film shot here. There’s even a statue of him and a mini film shown inside. Yet there’s almost no mention of the actual history of the house or the area—the tragic story of the family who lived here, what stood before, or the Templar connections. Those fascinating parts are completely overlooked.
I knew a lot because I did my own research before visiting, and I’d recommend you do the same if you want to really understand the place. I even overheard a guide giving a tour, and she was basically reciting inaccurate Wikipedia information, which was disappointing.
So while the site itself is nice and less crowded, the management is poor—like many Portuguese attractions. Still, compared to others, this was one of the more enjoyable visits, and that’s why I rate it higher.
