点评:There's a reason that this collection is so famous: it's a surprising collection of high quality European art in a charming and historic setting. The museum has done a beautiful job of preserving and interpreting its historic buildings and grounds, and then the art collection itself is filled with little gems.
It seems like this must be a wonderful resource for the students at SUNY Adirondacks: when studying history or art history, they can see some examples of originals, close at hand and repeatedly, while they are learning. Still, be aware that these are often small pieces - not like the huge masterpieces that you'll see closer to where the artists originally worked.
And, like all the collections amassed at this time, some pieces that were probably bought as being by the famous masters are actually by students or copyists, but they still give you a sense of what was being done at the time.
I went to this museum on a blustery, wet day, which gave me plenty of time to really spend time with all the work. (I think that visiting permanent collections is one of the great secrets of enjoying art: you see the same terrific works, without the crowds that you will find at a special temporary exhibition.) I highly recommend a visit. And if you live nearby, don't take it for granted! Go visit again, it's a wonderful museum.
