Mercado Municipal de Faro的点评
点评：This is Faro’s large, modern market hall with a vast variety of food stalls and some (simple but very good) restaurants and coffee shops on the ground floor, offices and other services (including a judo club!) on the top floor and a large, very good supermarket (Auchan) and underground car park on the lower floor. The Mercado is in the town centre, just a ten-minute walk from Faro’s Marina and even less to the pedestrianised shopping streets. Inside, it seems fully accessible with stairs, escalators and lifts. If you’re looking for deposit-return machines (Volta), they’re located just inside the pedestrian door to the car park as you enter it from the direction of the supermarket.
As a tourist, you will probably call here to check-out the amazing food stalls. If you do, make sure to come in the morning and I’d say definitely no later than 14h, because vendors start early and close early. Whether you intend to cook at your self-catering accommodation, pick up some items for a picknick lunch or even to take back to your home country, you’re sure to find excellent produce here. There are butchers and delicatessens, fish and seafood sellers, fruit and vegetables vendors, bakeries, you can buy honey, preserves, nuts, there are some specialist stalls including potters, florists, seamstress / dressmaker but also some generic knickknacks. One vendor specialises in every type of dried peas, beans, lentils, chickpeas etc you can think of.
We stayed in Faro for a week and bought here often. We found that some vendors have excellent English, others just a smattering and others none, but it didn’t matter because all were friendly and communication by pointing or hand waving worked very well. Of course, it doesn’t so any harm at all if you, the tourist, have and use the most basic words such as hello, please and thank you! Note that most vendors will prefer cash payment (no large notes for tiny purchases!) but many do have card readers. One point to note: If you’re a vegan / vegetarian or general animal lover and disapprove of the sale of live snails that are trying to escape the bowl they’re kept in, or live lobsters or crabs with their claws banded, or experience grief seeing amazingly beautiful but dead fish staring at you with their dead eyes, or a pig’s head displayed on a butcher’s counter, please don’t be rude to the locals! Either don’t visit those sections or walk past them. Remember that you’re a guest in those people’s country.
However, whether you just want to look and marvel at the wide range of goods on offer, or actually want to buy fresh produce, I do highly recommend a visit to the Mercado to get a feel for “the real Faro”.
